Methodology

How we test every VPN

Rankings are only worth something if the tests are real. Ours run on real hardware, on real restricted networks, every month.

  1. 1

    Connect from inside the block

We test from Beijing, Shanghai, Moscow and St. Petersburg via local ISPs, not from a datacenter abroad.

  2. 2

    Measure speed & stability

Ten speed runs per protocol, 24-hour drop-out logging, and streaming unblock checks on six platforms.

  3. 3

    Audit privacy claims

We read the logging policy, check for independent audits and verify DNS/IPv6/WebRTC leaks.

  4. 4

    Score value, then re-test

Price per device, refund terms and support quality — then the whole cycle repeats every 30 days.

Scoring

How the score is built

Every VPN gets one score out of 10, weighted like this. The weights are fixed; a provider can't move them.

  1. Speed & stability 25%
  2. Security & privacy 25%
  3. Reliability in restricted regions 20%
  4. Streaming & unblocking 15%
  5. Value for money 15%

Quick answers

No. Our overall pick balances speed, security, price and reliability in restrictive regions. If you only care about one thing — say, Netflix from abroad — check the dedicated guide, where the ranking can differ.

Most are not. Free services often log and sell traffic data or inject ads. The exception is a reputable freemium tier such as ProtonVPN's, which is limited but honest.

Only the ones with obfuscation designed for it. Our China and Russia guides are re-tested every month and list the providers that currently connect.

Some outbound links are affiliate links, so we may earn a commission if you buy. It never affects a score or a ranking — our methodology is published above.
